Jefferson School announces board directors and introduces new members
The Jefferson School recently announced new members who will serve on its board of directors. Members are appointed to three-year terms with new members appointed for the current 2013-14 school year.
The Jefferson School Board of Directors is composed of community members and is charged with upholding the mission of the school, which includes setting policies, identifying and securing funding, and long-range planning. The head of school and director of marketing and development serve ex officio on the board.
“We have new members from our community who bring diverse backgrounds and experiences to produce a wide array of perspectives," said Nicholas Benz, board chair.
Head of School Constance Hendricks said, “We are grateful to have new board individuals who are willing to give their expertise and time for the benefit of The Jefferson School and community.”
Board President Nick Benz is the chief operating officer and part owner of Dogfish Head Craft Brewery and affiliated companies. He has a degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Pennsylvania and has worked all over the world as an engineer. Benz is married with three children; the oldest attends The Jefferson School.
Charles L. Burton is the owner of I.G. Burton Inc., with auto dealerships in Milford and Seaford. Burton is married with two children, one a student at TJS and the older a graduate. Burton has a degree in criminal justice, experience in selling finance and insurance products, traveling the country providing training services, and running an Indian reservation dormitory. He has served on a number of boards including Seaford Rotary, La Esperanza, and Delaware Guidance.
Richard Caruso, MD, is board certified in internal medicine and gastroenterology, and the owner and medical director of Seaside Endoscopy Pavilion in Lewes. He received his JD from Villanova Law School, graduated from Jefferson Medical College, and completed his residency and fellowship through Lankenau Hospital in Pennsylvania. Caruso moved to Lewes in 1993, is married, and has three children; two graduated from TJS while the youngest is a current student.
The Hon. Alan G. Davis, vice president of TJS Board of Directors, took the bench as the fourth chief magistrate of the Delaware Justice of the Peace Court in July 2005. Prior to that, he was an attorney with the Georgetown firm of Henry Clay Davis III P.A. and served as chief minority counsel for the state House of Representatives. Davis holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of Virginia and received his JD from Widener University School of Law in Wilmington. He is married with two children; the older is a TJS student.
Rachael Edelmann, board secretary, has a BA in psychology from the University of Delaware concentrating in psycho-pharmacology. She earned an Executive MBA from the University of Maryland and attended Temple University’s Pharmaceutical Sciences MS program. Edelmann is the president/CEO of Keiper & Associates Inc. Edelmann has two sons attending TJS.
Joseph Kim, DO, is a family physician in Laurel with the Nanticoke Physician's Network. He is the current president of the medical staff for Nanticoke Health Services and serves on the board of directors. He is also the Sussex County representative for the Medical Society of Delaware. Kim volunteers his time with Salisbury University, Sussex Child Health Promotion Coalition, and the YMCA. He is married and has one daughter at TJS.
Amanda Peters holds a bachelor’s degree in early education from Wilmington College. Peters is the COO and cofounder of DecalGirl, is married, and has a daughter at TJS. Peters is present at all the school’s fundraiser events and often participates in other local activities representing the school.
Treasurer Angela Wootten is a licensed certified public accountant in Delaware. She is the controller at Dogfish Head Craft Brewery. Wootten holds a BS in accounting from Wesley College. In 2011, she earned an MS in controllership from Strayer University. She is a member of the Delaware Society of Certified Public Accountants and the Institute of Management Accountants.
Constance R. Hendricks brings to The Jefferson School more than 24 years of experience with independent private school teaching and administration. She has taught various subjects including art, math, language arts, and social studies. Hendricks transitioned to administration when she became head of the upper level of Centreville School in 1999 and then to director of enrollment and financial aid for Centreville School in 2008. She received a bachelor of science degree in human resource management and her master’s in education from Wilmington University.
Marketing & Development Director Ginger Jensen has worked as a marketing communications specialist at Nanticoke Memorial Hospital, and at Bayhealth Medical Center as Milford Memorial Hospital’s patient advocate. Jensen has degrees in communications and in human services. She has one daughter at TJS.
