Joan L. Moore, devout Christian

Joan L. Moore, 92, of Lewes, passed away Thursday, Nov. 28, 2024, at her late residence. She was born Aug. 29, 1932, in Bridgeton, N.J., daughter of the late Albert and Mae Ritter Dorman. 

Joan was also preceded in death by her husband Harry A. Moore in 2011; a brother Ernest Dorman in 2007; sisters Evelyn Brumbaugh in 2007, and Elizabeth Thomas; her nephews Joshua Alan Thomas in 1985, and Frank D. Brumbaugh in 2012; her niece Sue Dorman Wright in 2007; her sisters-in-law Doris Betts Dorman in 2009, and Doris Moore Sharp in 1998; and her brother-in-law Frank J. Brumbaugh in 2012.

She was a graduate of Lewes High School Class of 1950. During high school, she worked at the 5&10 store on the Rehoboth Beach Boardwalk and for her father from 1948-52. Her later endeavors, which involved bookkeeping and payroll work, included working for Sportcraft in Lewes from 1952-54, as a wife and mother from 1954-64, Tunnell & Raysor Law Firm from 1964-66; Fish Products Co. from 1966-74, Anderson-Stokes, and then Long & Foster Realtors from 1974-96, and for Parsell Funeral Homes from 1996 to 2008.

She was a member of the Unity Chapter No. 16 Order of the Eastern Star since 1954. During this time, she held the positions of Worthy Matron from 1970-71 and 2018-19, was Worthy Grand Matron of the Grand Chapter of Delaware 1983-84, and was a member of the ESTARL committee of the General Grand Chapter Order of the Eastern Star 1988-91.

In 1978, she was appointed by Gov. Pete du Pont to serve on the Sussex Vocational-Technical High School board of education, an appointment which she held until 1993. She also served on the Delaware Advisory Council for Vocational Education from 1980-93 and the National Council for Vocational Education (Perkins Council) from 1982-93.

She was a devout Christian and member of the Bethel United Methodist Church, where she has served in many capacities, including singing in the church choir for over 50 years.

Joan is survived by her children, Brent Moore (Nancy), Mark Moore (Barbara) and Jayne Leitzel (Jim); grandchildren, Mark D. Moore Jr. (Cori), Lauri Vent (Eric), Jordan Moore (Ashley) and SSgt. Jesse Moore (Sybille); five great-grandchildren, Cruz Vent, Delayne Mae Vent, Mason Moore, Chip Moore and Luke Moore; and siblings, Albert Dorman, Sue Stone and Sarah Richards.

Eastern Star services will be held at 11 a.m., Tuesday, Dec. 10, at Bethel United Methodist Church, 129 W. 4th St., Lewes, where Christian services will begin at 11:15 a.m. Friends may visit beginning at 10 a.m. Private interment will follow the services at Bethel Methodist Cemetery, Lewes.
