Joseph Wayne Callaway, self-made businessman

June 9, 2021

Joseph Wayne Callaway, 74, of Milton passed away peacefully Tuesday, May 18, 2021, in Jackson, N.J. Wayne had been valiantly fighting multiple illnesses during the last few years and sadly lost his last health battle quickly, with a rare form of leukemia.

Wayne was born Nov. 28, 1946, the oldest son of the late Joseph N. and Virginia Callaway. After graduating from Milton High School in 1965, he served in the U.S. Navy on the aircraft carrier USS Enterprise. Wayne took pride in being a veteran who had served his country. He continued to live in Milton and valued his many friendships. Wayne was well known for his excellent memory of details from throughout his life, and loved having long conversations reminiscing with others.
Known as a well-respected and self-made businessman, Wayne began his grocery career with the Milton IGA store in 1970 and later expanded with other stores in the towns of Greenwood and Bridgeville. His final project was building and operating the Long Neck Shopping Center with his partners. Wayne made a point to encourage and support many others in his life and shared his business knowledge willingly, as he had been mentored and encouraged by his close friend Paul Collins during their longtime friendship. One of the greatest gifts that Wayne readily offered was his time and concern.
Surviving Wayne are his loving wife of 50 years, Janet (Watson) Callaway, daughter of the late Jay and Estella Watson of Milford; and son Joey Callaway and his wife Erin of Robbinsville, N.J. One of Wayne's greatest joys was being a grandfather to Benjamin, Sean and Owen; he was so proud of Joey and his three sons. They share many cherished memories and will continue to make him proud. Wayne is also survived by his sister Elaine C. Moore (John) of Atlantic Beach, N.C.; nephews Allen Callaway and Christopher Moore (Alyssa); nieces Lisa C. Garrison and Lauren M. Liwen (Matt); and sister-in-law Nancy Watson. Wayne will be deeply missed by many friends, especially by his close friend since elementary school, David Dodd of Milton.
Wayne will also be remembered as a devoted pet lover who shared his life with many cherished dogs during his lifetime, from Fuzzy, who accompanied him on his paper route as a boy, to Max, a beloved miniature Sheltie, who was shared with Joey's family and brought joy and companionship for 14 years. Wayne loved animals as deeply as a dear friend who needed care and attention.
Wayne preferred not to have a public funeral service, so his family will hold a celebration of his life at a future date. To honor Wayne's memory, perhaps a gift of time or support for someone in need would be meaningful.
