Plenty of area restaurants serve chicken. But none offer it as many ways as Kick n’ Chicken, which earlier this year opened a location in Long Neck, its third.

“We set a standard for quality and service that will force other businesses to step up their game, which will benefit the customers,” said Kick n’ Chicken owner Charlie Pollard.

Pollard opened the Long Neck location Jan. 28 and said business has been brisk every day since then.

“I’m really happy to open a new location in this economy,” he said. Pollard said he thinks opening a business now creates jobs. It’s also an indicator the economy is beginning to recover.

The first restaurant opened in 2006 at Wescoats Corner. The second location, opened in 2007, is on Route 1 in the shopping center with Food Lion.

Menus at the restaurants are identical, but only the Long Neck location features outdoor dining.

Pollard said before opening the first restaurant he planned to sell only Buffalo wings. Fried chicken was an afterthought.

“Two weeks prior to opening I felt we needed to explore it. So I melded a few chicken cooking theories I’ve used to create a recipe. Now, fried chicken has become the primary product we sell,” he said.

But Pollard hasn’t forgotten people love chicken a variety of other ways.

There are Buffalo wings – bone-in and boneless – chicken tenders, subs, sandwiches, cheese steaks, wraps, salads and a variety of sides that don’t contain chicken.

Everything on the menu is available to go and each location has inside dining.

The restaurant also offers catering services providing chicken for any event. “Most of what we do is large sporting events,” said Pollard.

“Our boneless wings are available at six Delaware high school football teams’ games – Sussex Tech, Sussex Central, Milford, Dover, Indian River and Cape Henlopen. We’re out there in the community,” Pollard said.

Since opening in Long Neck, Pollard said he’s been getting requests for what he calls “gibs,” chicken livers and gizzards. “There’s a likelihood we’ll add gibs this summer,” he said.

The restaurants open at 10 a.m. daily and, during winter, close at 9 p.m. Closing time during summer is 10 p.m. or later.

The new restaurant is at 26098 John J. Williams Highway (Route 24), Long Neck, near McDonald’s on the opposite side of the highway. The phone number is 302-947-1110.
