Leon T. Baker Sr., hardware store owner

Leon T. Baker Sr., 95, of Millsboro passed away at his home Sunday, Jan. 5, 2020. He was born March 12, 1924, in Gumboro to the late Norman C. and Sara West Baker. In addition to his parents, he is also preceded in death by his beloved wife Doris in 1981 after 37 years of marriage.

He was a high school graduate, and after school married his sweetheart, Doris. Leon led a fascinating life, having served in five major battle campaigns in WWII, including the Normandy Invasion and the Battle of Ardennes, known commonly as the “battle of the bulge.” He was wounded in combat. After the war, he and his brother Vernon co-founded Baker’s Hardware, which is a successful business today in Millsboro. With his wife, they raised their children, family, and grandchildren whom he adored. Leon was a man of few words, but a caring family man. He was a member of Grace United Methodist Church, and became a well-known fixture in Millsboro, as well as a respected member of the community.

Leon is survived by his children: Linda L. Pusey (Bill), of Millsboro, L. Thomas Baker Jr. (Meredith) of Florida, and Alan Scott Baker (Donna) of Millsboro. Also surviving are his grandchildren: Tish Pusey, Ryan Pusey (Sarah) both of Millsboro, Shane Baker (Jessica) of Georgetown, and Dylan Baker of Millsboro. There are six great-grandchildren: Luke, Lee Ann, Kalyn, Lance, Christian and Charlotte. Leon is also survived by his brother and business partner: Vernon Baker, also of Millsboro.

A funeral service and celebration of his life will be held at Watson Funeral Home, 211 S. Washington St., Millsboro. Viewing and visitation are from 11 a.m. till 1 p.m., Sunday, Jan. 12. The funeral service follows at 1 p.m., with the Rev. Karin Tunnell officiating. Interment follows at Millsboro Cemetery with military honors by the U.S. Army.
