Letter: Lopez has worked diligently to improve Rt. 1

November 3, 2018

I am a member of the Polio/Post-Polio Survivors Support Group - Sussex County, and I had the opportunity several years ago to attend a committee meeting Sen. Lopez co-chaired with Rep. Schwartzkopf. It was a community meeting to discuss making Route 1 from Five Points to the “Forgotten Mile and beyond” safer for traffic and pedestrians.

During that meeting I saw two men from different political parties working together to help improve traffic safety for all.

The senator understands, by listening to the needs of all people, including those who are disabled in his district, and doing his best to make it safer on Route 1. As a result of his work, sidewalks have been placed from Five Points to the  Forgotten Mile, Hawk pedestrian crossing systems have been installed at two points, and bicyclists have been educated to ride on the sidewalks instead of the highway. This area has become a safer place for the disabled, bicyclists and pedestrians crossing Route 1.  Since the improvements have been made, there has not been one pedestrian fatality to date in this area. Sen. Lopez understands that all people with disabilities want to age in place independently, and he is working to make it happen.
