Letter: We must do better on Nov. 6

October 26, 2018

At a social event the other night, I overheard someone say “Ernie Lopez is a nice guy, but he votes the wrong way on every bill.” I decided to check his voting record myself, and lo and behold. Ernie Lopez voted against an increase in the minimum wage, against same-sex marriage, he voted against a law prohibiting discrimination based on gender identity, against decriminalizing small amounts of marijuana and against abortions before viability.

While I was at it, I checked the voting record for Steve Smyk, state representative District 20. He voted against raising the minimum age to buy a firearm and he voted against prohibiting underage marriage. Incidentally, the Delaware House or Senate passed every one of these bills, despite nay votes from Lopez and Smyk.

Politicians will say anything on the campaign trail to get elected. The proof is in how they vote. Despite claims of equality and fighting for the common man, these Republicans voted contrary to the public interest; they voted against equality and they turned a blind eye toward women’s issues, exactly in line with the current national Republican Party.
Sussex County:  Stop being fooled!  We must do better on Nov. 6.

Talk to your neighbors, talk to your friends and get out the vote. From what I have seen, the Democrats running in Sussex County this cycle are pro business, pro jobs, pro environment, pro equality and caring about women and minorities. They are moderates with the right balance. Vote for David Baker, state Senate, and John (Jack) Bucchioni, state Representative District 20, or any other Democrat on the ballot.
