Lewes in Bloom enters several America in Bloom contest categories

September 9, 2015

Lewes in Bloom, along with the City of Lewes, participated in the national 2015 America in Bloom Contest in July. The winners of the nationwide competition will be announced Saturday, Sept. 26, in Holland, Mich., at an America in Bloom Symposium. Lewes in Bloom representatives will attend the event.

Volunteers from Lewes in Bloom, the Lewes Chamber of Commerce, the Mayor’s Office, Parks and Recreation, and the Lewes Historical Society combined efforts to boost Lewes to the top of the competition. In addition to vying for the overall award, Lewes in Bloom is also competing for the Outstanding Achievement Award for Historic Preservation, and the Community Champion Award. The Community Champion Award nominee is Warren Golde, horticulture expert and co-founder of Lewes in Bloom.

Another category of competition is video. To see Lewes in Bloom’s video, go to https://youtu.be/j6HjC0Plv4k. Every click on the Lewes in Bloom video improves the chances of winning the video competition portion. But more importantly, the video will allow viewers to see the entire City of Lewes in its historical and blooming splendor.

Lewes won the America in Bloom contest in 2003, 2005 and 2010 for cities with population under 5,000. In 2012, Lewes was honored with the Circle of Champions designation. This honors the achievement of communities that have won a combination of three population and/or criteria awards over the years. “Only [13] cities (out of more than 200) have earned this distinct honor,” according to America in Bloom’s website.

Lewes in Bloom is a volunteer organization of more than 130 members, who in 2014-15 spent hundreds of hours planting thousands of bulbs and plants throughout the city. It promotes the beautification and maintenance of historic Lewes and the community at large. It is dedicated to helping Lewes boost its attractiveness through a variety of efforts including historical preservation, environmental awareness, a children’s garden, floral displays, and more. Information on membership and support can be found at www.lewesinbloom.org or Facebook.
