Lewes Crossing elves at it again
For the second year in a row, neighbors in the Lewes Crossing community have gathered in Ken and Mickey Marmen’s basement workshop to create magic.
For the past five weeks, they have been constructing an array of wooden toys to support the local Marine Toys for Tots campaign. All totaled, the busy elves built 120 toys, including beach Jeeps with surfboards, helicopters, roadsters, trains, four castles, doll beds and even a Cinderella coach. They delivered the load of toys on Nov. 19.
The neighbors worked in groups of 12 in an assembly line taking four three-hour shifts for five weeks, starting in early October.
Ken said ladies in the group also made foam-filled mattresses, pillows, sheets and dolls to go with the beds. “We really have some talented neighbors,” he said.
The Marmens retired to the Lewes area in June 2020 and organized a group that fall to build 50 toys, even with COVID-19 restrictions in place.
