Lewes Historical Society’s cannonball reinstalled

New placement is deeper into the wall
May 30, 2023

The authentic replica of a cannonball that struck what is now called the Cannonball House in Lewes has been reinstalled. Lewes Historical Society Executive Director Andrew Lyter said the cannonball is embedded further in the wall this time around to prevent it from “running away” again.

In February, the cannonball disappeared from its place in the foundation of a museum along Front Street, grabbing the attention of the First Town in the First State and prompting a slew of amateur detectives to take up the case both online and at the site itself.

Zwaanendael Museum Lead Historical Interpreter Devon Filicicchia found the missing cannonball on the sidewalk in front of the Fisher-Martin House along Kings Highway on her way into work the morning of Feb. 23.
