Lewes Polar Bear Plunge postponed to March 1

Special Olympics Delaware has announced the postponement of the 35th Annual Lewes Polar Bear Plunge, originally scheduled for this weekend, due to the forecast combination of extreme cold, high winds, accumulating snow and dangerous surf conditions. After extensive consultation with local authorities, safety teams and event partners, the decision was made to ensure the well-being of all participants, volunteers and spectators.

A makeup Plunge Weekend has been scheduled for Feb. 27 to March 1, and Special Olympics Delaware hopes to host the full lineup of festivities that traditionally take place throughout Plunge Weekend. While the organization is committed to re-creating the full experience – including signature events and activities – final confirmations depend on venue and participant availability.

“The safety of our community is always our top priority,” said Lisa Smith, vice president of marketing and development for Special Olympics Delaware. “While postponing the Plunge is always a difficult call, the combination of cold temperatures, strong winds, snow and dangerous surf made it necessary. We are grateful for everyone’s understanding and look forward to welcoming thousands of Bears back to the beach on March 1.”
