Lewes residents have a right to petition

December 1, 2023

The editorial labeling some Lewes residents as confused or uninformed is completely irrelevant to the name change issue. Instead of detailing the concerns of residents, the staff provided a lesson on the city’s core values and diversity. Exactly why this was needed I have no idea unless it was an attempt to shame the residents who brought the issue forward. It is the absolute right of residents to bring any issue forward in a perfectly legal manner via petition. City council can act on the petition or not. If the residents do not agree with council, they can settle the issue at the ballot box. I personally believe these residents are trying to preserve what little of Lewes is left. My unsolicited opinion is Lewes Beach and Johnnie Walker Beach are good names for the guarded beaches of the City of Lewes. Savannah is just a road that runs through the town.
