For the fifth straight year on Father's Day, the Delaware Community Appreciation Group traveled to Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C., to give wounded warriors a barbecue. In addition to lunch, wounded warriors were treated to music by Junior Wilson and The Movies and were given $20,000 worth of gift cards.
According to organizer Butch Elzey, founder of the organization, more than 300 people were served, including staff of the Mologne House, a hotel-type facility for wounded warriors and their families. In addition, Gen. Phillip McGhee, director of Army budget, attended the event and volunteered to serve food.
With the closure of Walter Reed, the organization is looking for another venue for its barbecue next year.
