March 27, 2023

A Frederica man was sentenced to 10 years in prison March 16 for causing a head-on collision near Bowers Beach that killed a Lewes woman and seriously injured her husband.

Dillion Satterfield, 27, was driving under the influence in May 2022 and speeding westbound along Bowers Beach Road when he passed a line of vehicles and struck an oncoming vehicle in the eastbound lane, officials said. A Lewes couple, Daniel O’Brien, 69, and his wife Ileana O’Brien, 68, were in the car that was struck in a no-passing zone, officials said. Daniel suffered serious injuries from the crash, and Ileana was killed.

Satterfield pleaded guilty in Kent County Superior Court to manslaughter, first-degree assault, and driving under the influence. He was sentenced to 10 years in prison followed by two years of intensive probation.
