Mariner hosts Middle School Unified Basketball Tournament
Mariner Middle School hosted the unified basketball tournament for Cape district middle school teams Feb. 6.
The annual event brings together student-athletes from Beacon, Frederick D. Thomas and Mariner middle schools for a morning of inspiring competition, camaraderie, inclusion and fun.
The tournament showcased the spirit of unified sports, where students with varying abilities compete together on the same team. Throughout the event, athletes demonstrated teamwork, perseverance and outstanding sportsmanship, cheered on by classmates and staff who filled the gym with high energy and support. Members of the Cape Henlopen High School unified basketball team were there to help the tournament run smoothly and efficiently by acting as referees, managing the clock, and even helping a few players get some well-earned points on the board.
More than just a competition, the tournament provides students the opportunity to build friendships across schools and experience the power of belonging through sport. Each game reflected the true mission of unified sports, breaking down barriers and creating inclusive school communities where every student is valued.
“Our Unified Basketball Tournament is one of the highlights of the year,” said Tom Pickard, Mariner physical education teacher and event coordinator. “Seeing our students encourage one another, celebrate each other’s successes, and truly play as one team is what makes this event so special. It’s about much more than basketball; it’s about students building confidence and connection with each other.”
Mariner Middle School organizers extend appreciation to Beacon and Fred Thomas middle schools for participating, as well as to the coaches, staff members, volunteers and supporters who helped make the event a success.
