Mary L. Roberts, faithful church member

Mary L. (Matthews) Roberts of Milford went home to be with her Lord Saturday, Jan. 28, 2023. She was at home surrounded by her family.

Mary was born in Georgetown, daughter of the late George and Florence (Clifton) Matthews.  

After graduating high school, Mary began her career in customer service as a waitress at Hollywood Diner. She provided child care for a short time, but found her calling in retail; a career that spanned 50 years. Mary worked for many years at Leggett in Milford and continued her career at the Milford store even after the store was renamed Peebles. She worked there until the age of 80. Mary loved her customers and after retiring would make daily trips to catch up with those former customers at Superfresh and later Redners. She also loved caring for others, and worked as a caretaker for several friends and family members when they needed her.

Mary was also a faithful supporter of Milford Church of the Nazarene. From its beginnings in the 1960s on Maple Avenue to its current location, she supported the church in many ways until her passing including Missions president, Sunday school teacher, and much more. 

In addition to her parents, Mary is preceded in death by her siblings George Matthews, Stella Collison and Elizabeth Frampton; an infant sister; a great-grandson Travis Holston; and son-in-law David Sapp.

She is survived by her loving husband of 64 years, Harold E. “Everett” Roberts, two children, Jeanne Sapp and Marvin Roberts (Joy); three grandchildren, Nicole Holston (Bobby), Kyle Roberts (Erin) and Amy Carey (Jon), three great-grandchildren, Parker, Adalynn and Ryder Carey; and five siblings, Hazel Smith, Joseph Matthews, Charles Matthews, Jerome Matthews and Carl Matthews; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family and friends.

A funeral service will be held at noon, Thursday, Feb. 2, at Milford Church of the Nazarene, 11 Salevan Place, Milford, where a time of visitation for family and friends will begin at 11 a.m. Interment will immediately follow at Milford Community Cemetery, 850 N. DuPont Blvd., Milford.

In lieu of flowers, the family welcomes memorial contributions to Milford Church of the Nazarene, 11 Salevan Place, Milford, DE  19963.
