Following the May 13 Cape school board elections, District C winner Patty Maull and at-large winner Bill Collick discussed what’s next for them.

“I think I’m still in shock, but I am truly honored that this community came out and showed up for me and believed in me to represent them,” Maull said. 

According to unofficial results, Collick received 3,208 votes, while his opponent Chris Lovenguth received 830. Maull received 2,011 votes, while her opponents Laura Parsons and Andy Lewis received 1,458 and 575, respectively.

“I’m very thankful to all the people who supported me, and it is certainly with gratitude that I accept this,” Collick said.

In his next term, Collick hopes to obtain a certificate of necessity from the state to help pass a referendum and get funding to support the district’s rapid growth. He wants to work with his fellow board members to continue helping students reach their highest potential, ensuring school and class sizes are conducive to learning.

He and Maull both want to continue to foster the board’s relationship with the community, ensuring everyone’s voices are heard. Maull’s focus now, she said, is going out and meeting folks, listening to what they have to say and what they need.

“I want people to know that they can come to me and talk, and I may not be able to give them an answer right then and there, but I will definitely try my hardest to get them something or lead them in the direction of where they can get their answer,” she said.

She’s excited to get to work and wants to start by providing more mental health resources to students.

“We have a great program, Morgan’s Message, that’s been coming in and helping our athletes, and I want to make sure that we’re giving those resources to all of the kids, so everyone can get the support when it’s needed,” she said.

Amidst the district’s shifting administrative leadership, both Maull and Collick are feeling very optimistic about the district’s direction. They applauded Superintendent Bob Fulton’s accomplishments and everything he’s done for the district, and they’re excited to see what Assistant Superintendent Jenny Nauman accomplishes when she takes over.

Maull has witnessed Nauman in numerous other roles, including as a principal to her twin daughters, and said she’s always been a great advocate for them. 

Regarding campaigning and the election, Maull said she couldn’t have had a better experience with Parsons and Lewis as her opponents.

“We had fun, we laughed, we enjoyed each other, and it doesn’t always happen like that,” she said. “I think it’s nice for people to see that it’s possible to all get along, because in the end, we all just want what’s best for our students, our staff and the community.”

“I want to thank everybody, and I really look forward to moving [the district] forward,” Collick added.
