Sea Scout Samuel Lee Parsons of Millsboro earned the highest rank of Quartermaster in a ceremony Nov. 4 at Grace United Methodist Church. Those who have earned this award are looked upon to be experts in seamanship, knots and lashings, leadership, and a variety of water-related skills.

Parsons joined the Sea Scouts in 2013 and immediately jumped into a leadership role. He served as a purser, boatswains mate and ship boatswain. Parsons was awarded the Eagle Scout Award in 2013. In 2015 Parsons graduated in a Sea Scout Advanced leadership training on the water with the highest score in the class. He was then selected as one of the six Sea Scouts in America for a week-long cruise along with cadets from the Coast Guard Barque Eagle, America’s Tall Ship 2016.

Parsons was honored as Sea Scout of the Year in 2016 and 2017. His Quartermaster project was leading a team of Scouts in the construction and installation of monofilament fishing line recycling bins throughout Sussex County. Parsons is currently a cadet at the United States Merchant Marine Academy where he is majoring in marine engineering systems.
