Milton decorates downtown in 1982
Downtown Milton hasn’t changed too much over the last half-century, as evidenced by this 1982 photograph of Union Street during Christmas. Most, if not all, of the businesses have changed, but the buildings have stood the test of time. These photographs were included in Milton’s application to the U.S. Department of the Interior to create a historic district.
On the right, in what is today’s Irish Eyes Restaurant, were Samuel’s Department Store and Ye Ole Good News Shop. Then in the unit that is now The Mercantile shop was Milton Hardware. On the opposite side of the road, Milton’s town hall and police station were located in the first brick building after the home. Next to that, in a portion of today’s Milton Theatre, was a restaurant.
On Federal Street during this time were a handful of stores, including Sussex Trust Bank, now M&T Bank; Workman’s Package Store, still a package store; and Shockley & Reed’s Delmar Market in two units that have been a variety of shops, galleries and salons in recent years.
