Milton planning to realign Rails to Trails crosswalk

October 15, 2025

Milton Town Council is considering a project that would reorient the crossing of the Rails to Trails on Federal Street.

Council unanimously approved a resolution Oct. 6, authorizing Town Manager Kristy Rogers to submit a grant application to the Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control.

“We’ve had a lot of concerns about that crosswalk,” said Mayor John Collier. “It’s not in the best of locations to begin with.”

Rogers said she plans to apply for an $83,000 Outdoor Recreation, Parks and Trails grant through DNREC with the town matching 50/50. She said once the Fiscal Year 2026 budget was approved, she prepared the grant application. Rogers said the project was ranked as a top priority by the town’s streets and sidewalks committee.

The project would include straightening out the sidewalk to be perpendicular, removing some of the sign clutter in the area and adding a flashing beacon to alert motorists to crossing pedestrians.

The first section of the Rails to Trails was built in 2008 from Chestnut Street to Federal Street. The second section was completed and opened in 2020, running from Federal Street to Lavinia Street.
