Milton students learn about healthy eating, exercise

May 17, 2018

Milton Elementary students learned about healthy eating and physical activity at a Delaware Division of Public Health assembly May 7.

Representatives from Public Health’s Physical Activity Nutrition and Obesity program engaged students in health trivia questions to teach the importance of physical fitness and nutritious foods.

Public Health created the assemblies in response to rising childhood obesity rates, citing a 2014 Nemours study that shows more than a third of Delaware children ages 6 through 11 are overweight or obese.

Students learned they needed 60 minutes of daily exercise to stay fit, and that they could achieve the daily exercise requirement at school recess and by playing outside with friends and family.

They learned to avoid sugary drinks, read food labels and eat five fruits or vegetables each day.
