The Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration Organization of Sussex County Inc. invites all to participate in the 37h Annual Commemorative Weekend Celebration from Saturday to Monday, Jan. 18 to 20, to honor the late civil rights leader.
The annual banquet will be held at 4:30 p.m., Jan. 18, at the CHEER Center, 20520 Sand Hill Road, Georgetown.
Talented young people from throughout the community will entertain with music, dance and spoken word.
Together We Make The Dream Work: Love+Unity=Power is the 2025 theme. It reflects the great importance King placed on the beloved community, the idea that people are much more powerful when working together in love. King said, “The end is reconciliation; the end is redemption; the end is the creation of the beloved community.” It is this type of spirit and this type of love that can transform opponents into friends.
Organizers encourage everyone to worship at a location of their choice Sunday, and to participate in the weekend’s various activities sponsored by local organizations, especially service projects.
The annual tradition of conducting a community worship service will continue at 10 a.m., Jan. 20, at at Conley’s United Methodist Church, 33106 Jolyns Way, Lewes. The messenger this year will be the Rev. Janice Herman, pastor of the Harmony/Friendship United Methodist Charge in Millsboro. She will present a one-woman skit called “The Bag Lady.” The worship leader will be the Rev. Cynthia Daniels Williams from Friendship Baptist Church in Lewes.
The community’s support is always needed and appreciated in perpetuating and nurturing King’s legacy, vision and dream. Donations may be sent to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration Organization, P.O Box 781, Rehoboth Beach, DE 19971. Contributions will help fund scholarships for deserving youth in Sussex County and the ongoing work of the organization.
A souvenir booklet will be available with only full- and half-page ads, which must be camera ready. A patron list is also available.
The deadline to purchase ads and patron listings is Monday, Dec. 16. For pricing details and to purchase ads and patron listings, and for Jan. 20 worship information, contact Janie Miller at 302-227-3118 or email jmm49@live.com.
