Mohammad Azem named Rehoboth Elementary School Spelling Bee Champion

June 2, 2021

After an online test taken by about 58 fourth- and fifth-grade students, Mohammad Azem was named Rehoboth Elementary School Spelling Bee Champion.

For the fall 2020 season, the Scripps National Spelling Bee program reached students and teachers across the world, the country, Delaware and at Rehoboth Elementary, thanks in large part to their new online testing platform. This resource provided access to tools that were needed to conduct the annual spelling bee via an online test and made the Scripps National Spelling Bee program possible at Rehoboth Elementary, where in-person events were limited due to COVID restrictions.

Both remote and in-person students were able to access the online spelling bee and vocabulary test. Students could take the test on their school-issued iPad device at school or from home. The online test included audio pronunciations for all words. This year’s spelling bee test also included an integrity pledge which all spellers had to acknowledge, a time limit and Scripps’ suggestion that parent/guardian proctors witness their child’s test. Mohammad went on to represent Rehoboth Elementary at the Delaware State Spelling Bee held in early March at St. Mark’s High School in Wilmington.
