Despite steady rain, the Delaware Beaches Chapter of Moms Demand Action hosted its third annual Rehoboth Beach event June 6.

Looking to end gun violence, dozens of supporters and volunteers attended the event in orange gear – clothing, hats, and orange ponchos and orange umbrellas for the rain.

Volunteer Karyn McCoy opened with a few words and a moment of silence for those in the audience who had been personally affected by gun violence. Making a difference starts with small steps, she said, and everyone has the power to act.

The Rehoboth gathering was one of a few events related to gun violence Gov. Matt Meyer attended that day. He was also in Laurel and Seaford. He was lauded by the group for signing an executive order May 1, creating a Delaware Office of Gun Violence Prevention and Community Safety. The governor spoke briefly, recounting a story of his time as an elementary school math teacher, when one of his students was dealing with the stress and consequences of gun violence at home.

There are kids growing up in Delaware who live in fear, said Meyer. This is not tolerable in an advanced society, and Delaware can be a leader, he said.

Following the rally at the bandstand, there was a group photo and march on the Boardwalk. The day of the event also marked National Gun Violence Awareness Day, which was followed by Wear Orange Weekend June 7-8.
