Cape senior Emily Monigle has been a starter on six state championship teams when combining field hockey and lacrosse. Squeeze down on the pressure and she will turn up the intensity.

On April 19 at Ursuline Academy, Monigle went maniacal, scoring four goals, dishing off three assists and grabbing seven draw controls as Cape escaped a game they seemed destined to lose, squeaking by with an 11-10 win.

The Vikings’ improbable run of championships includes 13 one-goal wins over the last 13 years, including four in 2012.

The game was characterized by fast whistles and failed clears combined with an Ursuline team that is no joke. The Raiders have the right stuff and right coach in Feffie Barnhill to contend for a state title.

They fought for it ... that is what we asked them to do at halftime,” said Cape coach Lindsey Underwood.

Cape trailed 6-4 at the half.

“Emily stepped up really big for us,” Underwood said. “She was steady and consistent the whole game. Lulu [Rishko], Carrie [Clausius] and Lexi [Nowakowski] have all really stepped up to give us some solid minutes out there in the last few games. It is starting to come together.’

Lindsay Rambo also won three crucial draw controls in the second half.

Cape inserted Kelly Bragg, who missed a week with a twisted ankle, onto the attack line to start the second half, and the the Energizer Bunny quickly scored.

Cape took the lead, but the Raiders retook it 10-9 with five minutes to play.

Ursuline took a shot that was stopped and cleared by Destiny Kusen, then passed up to Monigle who quickly scored to tie the game at 10-10.

Monigle won the ensuing draw and score to put Cape up 11-10.

The Vikings regained possession and milked the clock like a Hopkins cow in spread-red formation for close to four minutes, finally escaping with another one-goal victory.

Also scoring for Cape were Molly Mendez with three goals, and Bragg, Ella Rishko, Haley Craig and Clausius with one each.

Goalie saves were Kusen with five and Anna Lopez with three.

Amerlia Cradler had nine saves for Ursuline.

Cape beat Smyrna 18-2 April 21, and will travel to Worcester Prep Saturday, April 24, for a 1 p.m. game against the Fighting Mallards.
