Music knows no age
Twice Removed is their name, and classic rock is their game. Formed under the guidance of Southern Delaware School of the Arts music teacher Melody Oneschuk, the band features four 14-year-olds, now going in to high school, and a 12-year-old who will be continuing at the School of the Arts.
“I had them all in a rock band class, and I noticed they all meshed really well, and played well together. So I just said we’d go out to some restaurants and play as much as we could [this summer],” said Oneschuk, who is now their manager. “They come over to my house every week and they play in my garage,” she said. “I teach them how to play certain parts, organize the songs and book gigs,” and the rest lies with the band.
Their name comes from their choice in music. Twice Removed refers to the era in which classic rock was popular, now two generations behind their time. But their age doesn’t stop their enthusiasm and talent. “We’re all very versatile and can move around,” said band member Kathleen Carter. While she and her counterpart, Page Athey, play the piano, guitar, marimba, the ukelele and provide vocals, they don’t necessarily stick to one part throughout their shows. Being able to switch it up during the gig is their “thing.” That, and barely being in high school.
Athey, who is the youngest band member, is especially excited about playing in a more public realm. “It’s really cool. It’s a completely different environment and a little more interactive,” she said. “Just playing in a group is really fun, especially with a really close group of friends. It makes it more enjoyable.”
Drummer Ryan Bradley agreed. “It’s definitely something I enjoy more, and something that encourages me.” The parents are very excited about their kids' ventures as well, speaking highly of their academic, athletic and musical achievements. “But it helps that I really like their music, too,” said Athey’s dad, Hud.
With some of the band members going their separate ways to high school starting this fall, Twice Removed will play out the rest of the summer. “I certainly hope they stay together through the school year,” said Oneschuk.
The band will be featured at the Milton Irish Eyes Thursday, Aug. 20, and at the Millsboro Boro Bash Saturday, Sept. 19. There is also a possibility that they will play at the Lewes Irish Eyes in early August. To find out more about Twice Removed, find them on Facebook.
