NAACP youth celebrate Founders Day at Milton library

March 2, 2015

Members of the Lower Sussex NAACP Youth Council 2719 gathered at the Milton Public Library Feb. 14 to celebrate Founders Day. The event featured food, art and a video tribute to NAACP pioneers. A multiracial group of citizens united Feb. 12, 1909, establishing an organization with the mission of eliminating racism in America.

Now, 106 years later, the NAACP continues to seek “to ensure the political, educational, social, and economic equality of rights of all persons and to eliminate race-based discrimination.” Youth council members were reminded that they stand on the shoulders of iconic freedom fighters as well as countless nameless, faceless activists who came before them.

Many of today’s freedoms and opportunities were made possible by the sacrifices of others. Key NAACP founders include Mary White Ovington, Ida B. Wells and William English Walling.
