Masons to charter new lodge Oct. 7

The Masons of the Grand Lodge of Delaware will award a charter to Independence Lodge No. 76 during a ceremony at 11 a.m., Tuesday, Oct. 7, at Delaware Lodge No. 37, 28892 Church St., Dagsboro.

The name Independence Lodge was selected by the charter members to honor the 250th anniversary of the United States’ founding. Masonry is the world’s largest charitable fraternity, promoting service to the community, support for local organizations and unity among men of diverse backgrounds.

Independence is the first new Masonic Lodge to be founded in Delaware since 1978, nearly 50 years ago. Its purpose is to enable brothers who are unable or choose not to drive at night to participate, and to attract members who work late shifts. It will meet at 11 a.m., the third Tuesday of each month, except July and August. In the spring, meetings will be held at the new Masonic Temple on Sweetbriar Road in Lewes.
