DNREC to close the Point March 1

The Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control will close The Point at Cape Henlopen State Park, including a stretch of ocean and bay beach, starting Sunday, March 1, to protect the nesting grounds and migratory paths for threatened and endangered species, including piping plovers, American oystercatchers, least terns, red knots and other species.

UUSD to meet March 1

The Unitarian Universalists of Southern Delaware will hold a service at 10 a.m., Sunday, March 1, with Let Us Shine Our Light as the topic. The Rev. Heather Rion Starr said, “Join us in celebrating this tenacious, caring community as we kick off our annual pledge drive for the coming fiscal year. How can all of our individual sparks combine to grow the collective shining light of this community? What have we learned, and what might be possible?” 

Lewes council public hearing set Mar. 2

Lewes Mayor and Council will hold a public hearing at 5:30 p.m., Monday, March 2 in the Bonnie Osler Meeting Room at the Rollins Center.

Council will take comment on proposed zoning code revisions for accessory dwelling units and off-street parking.

NARFE meeting RSVPs due March 5

The National Active and Retired Federal Employees Association, Chapter 1690 Coastal Sussex, will meet at 11:30 a.m., Thursday, March 12, at a venue to be confirmed via email. Sussex County Register of Wills Greg Fuller will be the guest speaker. Romantic-era music discussion set March 6 

The Lewes Public Library Spoken Word Society will continue its series, Sublime and Dramatic: The Romantic Movement, as Lani Spahr presents a dialogue about the music of the era at 5 p.m., Friday, March 6, at the library, 111 Adams Ave., Lewes, and online via Zoom.

A professional oboist and renowned audio restoration engineer and producer, Spahr said, “Romantic music is often associated with such 19th-century greats as Beethoven, Schumann, Wagner and Tchaikovsky. However, the beginning cannot be pinned down, nor the end precisely detected.” 

He will share insights on the evolution of Romantic music from Handel in the 18th century to Elgar in the 20th.

Spahr lives in Lewes with his wife Judy, and is an active volunteer and lecturer for the classical music organization Coastal Concerts.

During the Romantic period of the late 18th- to mid-19th century, European artists, composers, authors, poets and philosophers pushed back against the rationalism of the Enlightenment by embracing the sublime and the dramatic in nature, metaphysics and human emotion. Continuing sessions set for March 13 and 20 will explore the defining elements of Romantic-era philosophy and literature.

Sussex Republican Women concert RSVPs due March 12

The Sussex County Republican Women’s Club will host a special concert and dinner event at 6:30 p.m., Friday, March 20, at the Millsboro Fire Hall, 109 E. State St., Millsboro. Sussex County Register of Wills Greg Fuller, a seasoned musician, will take the stage to deliver soulful songs from the “60s, ‘70s and ‘80s. Israel UMC to host revival service March 15

Israel United Methodist Church, under the direction of the Rev. Marjorie Belmont, will host a revival worship service at 3 p.m., Sunday, March 15, in the church at 20230 Plantation Road, Lewes, and online via Zoom. Guests will be Pastor Eloise Henry-Gordy and the choir of Zoar UMC, Selbyville. All are welcome.

Center senior bingo set March 18

Cape Henlopen Senior Center will host afternoon jackpot bingo from 1 to 4 p.m., Wednesday, March 18, at 11 Christian St., Rehoboth Beach. The public is welcome; doors open at 11:30 a.m. Admission is $20 per person and includes one game pack, specials and one quickie card. Additional games and food will be available at separate cost. GFWC Delaware scholarship applications due March 20

The GFWC Delaware State Federation of Women’s Clubs is accepting scholarship applications online and by mail through Friday, March 20.

This year, GFWC Delaware is offering a $2,000 scholarship for graduating high school seniors and a $1,000 scholarship for an individual returning to school in higher education or vocational education institutions. All applicants must be Delaware residents.

Rehoboth Beach Patrol sets tryouts

The Rehoboth Beach Patrol has announced tryout dates. The first tryout will take place at 9 a.m., Saturday, March 28, at Lake Forest High School, 5407 Killens Pond Road, Felton. The second tryout will be at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, April 11, at Sussex Academy High School, 21150 Airport Road, Georgetown. The third tryout will be at 12 p.m., Saturday, April 18, at Sussex Family YMCA, 20080 Church St., Rehoboth Beach.

Applicants will be required to take a test that includes a 1-mile run, push-ups, sit-ups, a 550-yard swim, a 100-yard spring swim, a 25-yard underwater swim and two types of pool rescues. There are time completion requirements. Applicants can be 15 at the time of the tryout, but they must be 16 on or before the Memorial Day weekend, and certified in CPR and first aid. Applicants also must complete the online application.
