Crackdown targets impaired driving
Continuing the fight against impaired driving, the Delaware Office of Highway Safety has launched its annual Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over high-visibility enforcement campaign, running through Friday, Sept. 5.
Historically, the Labor Day holiday weekend has been one of the deadliest periods for impaired driving. OHS and local law enforcement are stepping up enforcement through high-visibility DUI patrols with public education to deter impaired driving and prevent tragedies.
Between 2020 and 2024, the state recorded 641 crashes causing death, with 39% involving alcohol or drugs — crashes that could have been prevented. In 2024 alone, there were 1,033 crashes, 85 serious injuries, and 4,093 arrests involving impaired driving. Males accounted for 71% of impaired driving fatalities in Delaware.
OHS urges drivers to plan ahead before drinking, secure a designated driver or use a rideshare service like Lyft or Uber. Friends should take the keys from anyone considering driving drunk, and the public is encouraged to report suspected impaired drivers to law enforcement.

UUSD to meet Aug. 24
The Unitarian Universalists of Southern Delaware will hold a service Sunday, Aug. 24. The Rev. Dr. Ron Parks, UUSD member and a United Methodist Church ordained minister, said, “On Nov. 15 of next year, the Harbor of Refuge lighthouse off the coast of Cape Henlopen (the white one, not the red one) will mark 100 years of service to mariners. Its presence and service, however, are threatened by the same reality that confronts each of us: change. How can we shine brightly, if only for a moment, and yet trust that our light and life will illuminate the way home for those around us?” Learn more at uussd.org.

All Saints’ outdoor services continue Saturdays
All Saints' Episcopal Church has resumed its casual outdoor services at 5 p.m., Saturday evenings at 18 Olive Ave. in downtown Rehoboth Beach. Off-street parking is available in the church lot located just off First Street and Olive Avenue. The half-hour services include scripture readings, prayers, a brief homily, Holy Communion and songs performed by various musicians.
Everyone is invited to bring a beach chair or blanket and come as they are, even directly off the beach, Boardwalk or street. Services take place in the church gardens adjacent to the historic 1894 church structure, the oldest and only original worship site still standing and in continuous use in Rehoboth Beach. In the event of inclement weather, the service will be moved inside.
“It is amazing to see so many folks from all walks of life attending this service,” said Jon Rania, parish director of music and communications. "I enjoy the times when we are outside because it puts us in direct contact with nature and many of the wonderful things that we all enjoy here at the beach."
“What began as a necessity during COVID has become a congregational and community treasure. If you have never been, you should come and check us out,” said the Rev. Shelley D. McDade, parish rector.
