Overfalls anchor drop ushers in the new year

January 2, 2025

It was a night of high winds, hail, lightning and thunder, but the hardy ship’s crew persevered, and the weather broke just in time for the ceremonial anchor drop to ring in the new year. The Lightship Overfalls at 219 Pilottown Road in Lewes held its own version of a ball drop at midnight, Dec. 31, with a lighted anchor dropped from the ship’s mast to welcome 2025.

David Shook, Overfalls Foundation president, said, “The anchor dropping is a chance to share our maritime history with the people of Lewes, because the more they learn and the more they become involved in it, the better and tighter our community becomes.”
