Papa Grande’s Coastal Taqueria in Fenwick salutes Day of the Dead with 16 Mile Brewery

October 24, 2014

Papa Grande’s Coastal Taqueria in Fenwick Island and Georgetown-based 16 Mile Brewery are teaming up to present a beer dinner Saturday, Nov. 1, inspired by the Day of the Dead, a Mexican national holiday that honors deceased friends and family. The dinner begins at 6:30 p.m.

“We love celebrating the Halloween season along the coast in all our restaurants, but this is a particularly festive weekend for Papa Grande’s, which was designed to promote Latin American fare,” said Scott Kammerer, president and CEO of the Matt Haley Companies, whose SoDel Concepts division owns and operates eight beach-area restaurants, including Papa Grande’s in Fenwick and in Rehoboth Beach.

“With this special dinner, we’re further incorporating the culture into the cuisine,” Kammerer said. “We recognize that Day of the Dead is an important event in Mexico and in other Latin American countries.”

This is the second annual Day of the Dead dinner for the restaurant. “Last year, it was a big hit with our customers, and we successfully combined the celebratory and the solemn aspects of the holiday,”  said Jim Affeldt, director of operations for SoDel Concepts. “It gives our chefs the opportunity to represent the event - and Latin American cuisine - with a fun, creative menu.”

16 Mile will introduce Soul Cake Ale, a 9-percent Imperial Amber made with whole clove, nutmeg and cinnamon whiskey. (Soul Cakes are the British precursor to trick-or-treat goodies. On All Hallows’ Eve, All Saints’ Day and All Souls’ Day (Oct. 31-Nov. 2), “mummers” would go from door to door begging for a cake.)

The four-course menu features turkey tamale with red chile sauce and street corn salad; Mayan head-on shrimp ceviche with mango, avocado, lime, smoked paprika and chile; slow-roasted goat with cranberry mole, jicama-orange salad and housemade tortillas; and pumpkin pan de muerto with Mexican hot chocolate and cinnamon-pepita brittle.

The cost is $40 per person, and seating is limited. Call 302-436-PAPA (7272) for information. Go to www.papagrandes.com for menus and restaurant information.
