Perspective from a longtime local

September 21, 2021

I am so tired of all the whining ... if you’re not happy with the current conditions, run for some sort of office. These issues are years in the making. Biggest mistake  recently was Lewes residents voting out IG Burton. Why? Because his last name is associated with what every newbie assumes is a good old boy. What a mistake.

Oh, maybe it was because of his stint on the planning and zoning commission, which by the way, all decisions there are based on rules/laws on the books from the comprehensive plan. Oh, that’s right, didn’t he have a hand in helping to improve that also? But because we have been flooded with new residents ever since Superstorm Sandy, our little secret got out.

I have lived full time at the beach for 32 years and part time for the first 25 years of my life. My family has owned in Sussex County since 1965. It’s a beautiful place to live. Quit whining. If you don’t like it, move back to where you came from. Quit trying to change it to where you came from. Because although if you live here we all like to call ourselves locals, we are not. If you haven’t lived here all your life then you are part of the problem; instead of whining, become part of the solution.

By the way, the Forgotten Mile is not truly forgotten by the state in any manner. It’s the sleepy little zone which is mainly composed of homes because it was too far off the beaten track between Rehoboth and Dewey. Today it’s a thriving little community; the name just stuck. Maybe if you all who lived west of the beaches had amenities to go to, you wouldn’t have to trek out to the beaches. Hmm, that’s right, you didn’t want any convenience stores/service stations or anything else. Maybe if there was affordable housing, all those employees who take care of us could live closer to their employment. Oh, that’s right, because everyone that moves here thinks paying over and above the worth for a house is reasonable. That bubble popped in 2008; it will happen again, and everyone who has purchased in that manner will again be stuck or lose money trying to get out from under a house they paid too much for. Get out now while the getting is good.
