For most of the season, I heard very good things about the Seattle Mariners’ prospects to make the postseason this year. This week, the Phillies decided to put them in their place by playing their best three games of the season. The Phillies had almost 50 hits and their pitchers had 34 strikeouts. Superstar Mariners catcher Cal Raleigh had one hit the whole series and struck out a number of times.
In the last 10 days, second baseman Bryson Stott has been playing his best baseball. Shortstop Trea Turner finally hit his first home run at home this season, and he is hitting the ball all over the field. Kyle Schwarber has the league lead in RBIs with an impressive 109 so far this season. He has a legitimate chance to finish the season with over 130 RBIs.
The Phillies continue their homestand playing the last-place Washington Nationals this weekend. I hope their momentum continues.
Switching to football, I am slightly concerned about the Eagles’ start for this season because they have some concerning injuries on the offensive side of the ball. Their No. 1 wide receiver AJ Brown has not practiced in over two weeks with a significant hamstring injury, and their all-pro offensive linemen Jordan Mailata has a concussion and Landon Dickerson is on the mend from meniscus surgery. Both of these behemoths will not play in the last preseason game. The backup quarterback Tanner McKee has a finger injury, and fourth wide receiver Johnny Wilson is now out for the season with a leg injury. None of this is good news before starting the regular season games.
The Eagles play their biggest rival in the Dallas Cowboys in the first game. The preseason ends this weekend, so the team gets two weeks to prepare for the Dallas game. Let’s hope Jalen Hurts is ready to play on Week 1 with no live action during the preseason. I have always thought that could be a bit risky.
