Physical therapist sets postpartum healing workshop March 18

March 7, 2023

Megan Anderson Physical Therapy will host a postpartum workshop to help women on their healing journey, at 3 p.m., Saturday, March 18, in the community room at Troop 7, 19444 Mulberry Knoll Road, Lewes.

Presenters will be Dr. Megan Anderson, a pelvic and women’s health physical therapist based in Lewes, and Logan Shuttleworth, an occupational therapy student and mom of a lively toddler.

The workshop is open to all moms, expecting, pregnant or postpartum, and will provide guidance for the fourth trimester, the period of time after having a baby when it is important for new moms to take time for their own healing.

Attendees will learn practical skills that may not be addressed at their six-week follow-up appointment after giving birth.

Anderson and Shuttleworth will help participants address the goals of returning to activities that bring them joy – running, playing with their little ones, socializing with friends, or being intimate with a partner – without fear of certain symptoms impeding participation. The workshop includes education on how to navigate the postpartum journey and how to get back in the driver’s seat, controlling and connecting with one’s body once again.

“Is a trampoline, going for a jog, or an incoming sneeze your worst nightmare because you fear bladder leaks? Maybe you’ve been cleared for sex and exercise but have no idea where to even start to get back to understanding and recognizing your body. You may be accepting these symptoms of pain and dysfunction as normal, but it does not have to be. Having a baby does not mean you must live with bladder leaks, pain or fear of exercise for the rest of your life. If you are experiencing any of these thoughts, know that you are normal and that support throughout your postpartum journey exists,” said Anderson.
