PNC Bank building green in Rehoboth

February 22, 2009
The colors of PNC Bank’s logo are blue and orange, but the Pittsburgh-based company is going green with its newest bank branch under construction in Rehoboth Beach.

The new branch off Route 1 in what is now the parking lot of an existing PNC branch next to the former Salvation Army building will be a “Green Branch,” part of a larger initiative by the bank to use more eco-friendly business practices.

Tom Danielson, construction project manager for PNC, said the building would be 3,680 square feet, and it should be open before July 4.

In keeping with PNC’s Green Branch concept, the facility will have a contemporary, open look with more space for tellers and offices. PNC officials say more than 50 percent of materials in green branches are locally manufactured or made from recycled materials – floors, wall coverings and furniture fabric. The building will use natural light and high-efficiency insulation via window walls, which isolate from extreme exterior temperatures, and prefabricated wall panels.

The new facility will allow PNC to consolidate its two Rehoboth branches into a larger bank. No layoffs are planned.

Jason Beyersdorf, spokesman for PNC Bank, said, “There will be no effect on positions in the retail branches. PNC is committed to meeting the needs of our retail banking clients and providing convenient, uninterrupted access to banking services and, now, branch locations that reflect our commitment to environmental responsibility.”
