Politics and religion topic at St. Peter's Sept. 1

August 23, 2016

The Rev. E. Perren Hayes, a retired Episcopal priest, will speak on the relationship between politics and religion at the final presentation of the Summer Spirituality Series at St. Peter's Episcopal Church, Lewes, Thursday, Sept. 1.
The presentation will be in the parish hall, 221 Mulberry St., at 7 p.m. Discussion with the guest and social time with ice cream will follow.
In a presentation two years ago, Fr. Hayes described Science and Religion as opposite sides of the same coin. "The same is true with politics and religion," he says, "and with the way our elections have developed."
As a backdrop for his presentation, he said, he will draw upon the work of Stephen Hawking from the PBS series "Genius" that aired in May. In the series, Hawking, one of the world's leading physicists and cosmologists, challenges a selection of volunteers to think like the greatest geniuses in history and solve some of humanity's most enduring questions.
He said he will also reference National Geographic's landmark series "The Greeks" that aired on PBS in June, to show how their legacy illuminates our present time.
He is a graduate from Union College in Schenectady, N.Y., and General Theological Seminary in New York City, with two years of additional post-graduate study in Bible languages. He retired in 2002, and he and his wife, Gerry, moved to Lewes in 2007.
