The 2025 Friends of Prime Hook National Wildlife Refuge Nature Photography Contest and Exhibition will open with a reception at 2 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 19, in the refuge auditorium.
The contest, which usually draws more than 200 entries, is open to photographers of all ages, and there's always some magic in the scenes captured by local shutterbugs.
Beginning Friday, Aug. 15, photo entries may be submitted in any or all of these categories: Beauty of Prime Hook, Landscape/Seascape, Native Birds, and Native Wildlife (non-birds). The Friends group encourages younger photographers to get outside by offering special prizes to children 12 and under, and teens up to age 17.
Photographers are reminded to practice responsible and respectful wildlife viewing. Ethical practices include maintaining a safe distance from wildlife, using long lenses to avoid disturbing animals, and respecting local laws and regulations. Photographers should also be mindful of their impact on the environment and avoid actions that could alter natural behaviors or cause stress to animals.
Photographs must be mailed or hand-delivered to the refuge office on or before Saturday, Oct. 11. Submitted photographs will be judged by professional photographers during the week beginning Monday, Oct. 13. Winners will be announced and awards will be given at the Oct. 19 reception.
Entries will be displayed in the auditorium until Sunday, Dec. 14.
