Race for Open Space keeps pace with preserve

Annual 5K benefits conversion of Fourth Street land to urban forest
April 29, 2026

As a bald eagle watched from above, 110 runners hit the streets of Lewes for the third annual Race for Open Space April 25.

The 5K run and 1-mile walk raised money for the work being done to transform the Fourth Street Preserve into the state’s first urban forest.

Matthew Quandt was the overall winner of the 5K, with a time of 19:14.1.

The City of Lewes owns the 30-acre parcel. The preserve is not yet open to the public.

The presence of the bald eagle has impacted some work at the preserve.

Federal regulations require a 330-foot no-disturbance zone around the nest at all times. But during nesting season, December through June, that doubles to 660 feet.
