Raymond Elwood Townsend III, avid NASCAR fan
Raymond Elwood Townsend III, 53 of Dagsboro, passed away suddenly Monday, Aug. 15, 2016, at his home.
Ray was born in Salisbury, Md., April 13, 1963, son of Raymond E. and Evelyn (Hudson) Townsend Jr. He was a 1981 graduate of Indian River High School, and was a member of their alumni association. Ray was currently employed as the lead fuel handler at NRG in Dagsboro with 35 years of service.
Mr. Townsend was an avid fisherman and hunter. He also volunteered his time with the Southern Delaware Therapeutic Riding organization in the Lewes area that helps the emotional and educational growth of children and adults with disabilities. Ray was also a racing enthusiast. He would watch all NASCAR and NHRA races, and would frequent the Delaware International Speedway to watch the URC Sprint and World of Outlaw races. He was a supporter of his children's racing careers, and was currently the crew chief on his son-in-law's dragster.
He is survived by his loving wife of 33 years, Penny L. (McCabe) Townsend; a daughter, Paige Cathell and her husband Chad of Laurel; a son, Peyton Townsend at home; his father-in-law, George McCabe; a brother-in-law, Preston McCabe; his mother, Evelyn; a brother, Al; and a sister, Muriel.
A visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 18, at the Frankford Chapel of Melson Funeral Services, 43 Thatcher St., Frankford. A funeral service will be held at 2:30 p.m., Friday, Aug. 19, at the funeral home. Interment will follow at St. George's Cemetery in Clarksville.
