Rehoboth board should make all financial decisions

August 13, 2024

The Rehoboth Beach Board of Commissioners is discussing a new policy that would allow the commissioners to delegate their detailed budget responsibility to their new city manager.

It is a bad idea whose time has not yet come.

Let's review the record.

Contrary to the city charter, they hired a city manager for $250,000 annually plus many perks, including a $750,000 loan for housing.

They raised property taxes 29% only to discover they didn't need to.

They decline to disclose how much more the lifeguard station will cost.

Now the city manager is proposing the board of commissioners delegate, without any details, the ability to allow staff to move funds between the general fund, and water and wastewater fund.

The elected officials should make all financial decisions transparently and not delegate authority to move money around.

Please give us the proposed details to safeguard the taxpayers from the current rampant incompetence.
