Relay for Life of Sussex County virtual event raises $34K

November 3, 2020

Relay for Life of Sussex County held a virtual relay on Facebook Oct. 10, since an in-person event was not possible due to COVID-19 restrictions.

Held in every state and many foreign countries, Relay for Life is the largest fundraising activity of the American Cancer Society. It emphasizes honoring cancer survivors and remembering those lost to this disease.

The Sussex event opened with remarks by Kathy Blanchette of the Sunshine 4-H Relay team.

Cancer survivor Mark spoke of the value of ACS-sponsored cancer research and crucial studies at significant risk of funding cuts this year due to COVID-19’s effects limiting fundraising activities.

Survivor Lori described her stay at a Hope Lodge, one of a group of supportive ACS facilities providing accommodations for patients undergoing treatment away from their home communities.

Survivor Judy shared the help she received with transportation to her treatment sessions from the ACS Road to Recovery program. Several music videos inspired and supported the relay message. The event concluded with a virtual luminaria ceremony with candles lit in memory and honor of friends and family members who have had cancer.

To view the virtual event, go to the SussexDERelay page on Facebook.

This year’s efforts already have raised more than $34,000. To donate, go to relayforlife.org/sussexcode.
