In another beautiful run-up to summer, June 4 and 5 saw hundreds of road racers, runners, joggers and walkers taking it to the streets and challenging the 5K and 10K distances. The greater portion of their entry fees was diverted to worthy causes. The Run for the Ribbon race in Lewes June 4 was held in memory of cancer victim Nancy Hendershot, and the Dos Locos 5K in Rehoboth June 5 donated its proceeds to the Council for Economic Education.
A total of 103 runners completed the 5K race at the Run for the Ribbon, which ended at Cape Henlopen High School. Jordan Sterner, 24, of Baltimore was the overall winner in a time of 17:38. Logan Shuttleworth, 11, granddaughter of Nancy Hendershot, was the first female to cross the line in 22:10.
Forty people elected to run the longer 10K. Rick Jones, 40, of Frederica was the overall winner in a time of 39:42. Morgan Ridings, 41, of Lewes was the first woman to cross the line in 49:08.
The Dos Locos 5K, starting from Wilmington Avenue in Rehoboth, had 189 finishers. Enos Benbow won the race in 16:30. The first woman was Susan Dunn, 33, of Laurel in 21:22.
The next Seashore Striders event is the Saturday, June 11 Blue-Gold All-Star 5K, which begins at Irish Eyes on Anglers Road in Lewes. Proceeds from the event benefit the Delaware Foundation Reaching Citizens with Intellectual Disabilities.
