Royals boys put Dragons on the rack by 32

Delmarva Christian moves to 10-2
January 30, 2020

The Salisbury School basketball squad started out hot, playing like they could stay with the Royals, until the middle of the first period. But the Delmarva Christian squad turned on the afterburners and extinguished the Dragons’ flame 93-61 for its fifth ESIAC victory of the season.

Freshman Gabe Herling scored 14 points in the first half and finished with 21 in the game to lead all scorers.

“Coach always tells us to come out strong and get ahead early,” Herling said. “If we don’t take off quickly, the opponents could take advantage and get up on us.”

Junior forward Chase Hesson was averaging three points per game, but he turned up the his offensive power to score 19 points in the win.

“I’ve been looking to find the best pass to Wyatt [Kwiatkowski] and Andrew [Workman],” said Hesson. “Anything that can help them out, but I’ve also been working on my midrange game and my confidence.”

“When Chase shoots with confidence, he’s amazing,” said Royals head coach Micah Twedell. “He boxes out really well and plays tough defense too.”

Workman hit for 19, Lou Fleurima scored 10 and Kwiatkowski, Chris Vonhof, Nate Moyer, Seth Stevens and Zach Smith rounded out the Royals scorebook.

“We keep passing well, and if we keep doing that, we’ll be OK,” Kwiatkowski said. “We are using our last two losses (Saint Mark’s, William Penn) as fuel to keep pushing. After J-Term, we had a few rough games, but we’re doing better.”

The Royals substituted freely in the second half of the game and outscored the Dragons 33-24.

“We set a goal before the game that we were going to push the ball 100 percent of the time,” said Twedell. “But we’ve got to be better disciplined, and not reach and get into foul trouble. Our younger guys did great tonight. They practice against a pretty good team every day, and when they get in, we expect them to be ready.”

The Royals traveled to Holly Grove Christian School Jan. 29 and defeated the Eagles 69-48. Andrew Workman led the Royals with 19 points.

Delmarva Christian will return home Friday, Jan. 31, to play Salisbury Christian School.
