Rylie’s Dog Days of Summer 5K to benefit sick children Sept. 2

August 24, 2019

American Legion Post 17 in Lewes will host the Fourth Annual Rylie’s Dog Days of Summer 5K and Kiddie K to benefit the Rylie’s Smile Foundation at 8 a.m., Labor Day Monday, Sept. 2, at 113 American Legion Road, Lewes.

Rylie’s Smile Foundation is named after Rylie Maedler, now 13, who endured extensive surgery and rehabilitation following an aggressive bone tumor and, later, a seizure disorder. After her initial diagnosis, Rylie began to experience seizures. Working with specialists, she received and has had success with an alternative medication. Rylie’s Law was passed in 2015 and benefitted other children with similar conditions. Today, Rylie and her mother are involved with international research and advocacy addressing pediatric use of medical cannabis.

The foundation brings smiles back to sick children and their families by helping them achieve a better quality of life through health education, technology devices, advocating for treatment options for seriously sick children, and supporting research on less toxic therapy.

Sen. Ernie Lopez, R-Lewes, is honorary chair of the event. Cherie Ferebee will sing the national anthem. The amazing sounds of Catch the Drift will entertain on stage throughout the event.

Rylie’s mother Janie Maedler thanks all sponsors including American Legion Post 17, Shimadzu, Funland, Paws for People, Activ Pest Solutions, Rylie’s Sunshine, Races2Run, Red Sun Customs, Nova Timing, JD Shuckers, Fresh Market, Rehoboth Sunrise Rotary, Bad Hair Day, Certified Running Nuts and many others who have supported the cause.
