A saturated Santa 5K runs through fog at Cape Henlopen State Park

December 17, 2019

Matt Spraracino, the Harrington Harrier, ran an easy 19:11 from the foggy fishing pier Dec. 15 at Cape Henlopen State Park to win the 14th annual Run With Santa 5K.

Kelsey and Alexis Oliphant exchanged no gifts, with Kelsey running 22:13 with Alexis on her heels at 22:14.

A total of 66 runners, mostly decked in Santa garb, ran the race.

“We went from 3,000 last weekend at the Rehoboth half and full marathon to 66 today,” said Race Director Tim Bamforth. “Small races are fun, and the local runners are what make running a year round sport in our area.”

Cape freshman Katie Kuhlman ran 22:51, just ahead of Cindy Price Washeck in 22:53. Cindy, a Cape graduate, is the only Viking to ever win an individual state title in cross country. She has gone from Lewes to Lake St. Louis, Miss., where she and her husband run a physical therapy business. Cindy was female masters champion.

The last Seashore Striders race of the 2019 season is the 17th annual Race Into the New Year 5K at noon, Tuesday, Dec. 31, from the Bandstand on Rehoboth Avenue.
