Scouts help animals in need at Georgetown shelter

July 14, 2012

Brandon Veasey of Millsboro is an animal lover who put his passion into action to help the animals of the Delaware SPCA’s Georgetown shelter. Brandon is a Boy Scout with Troop 89 in Millsboro. To earn his Eagle Scout Badge, Brandon chose the Delaware SPCA for his service project.

Eagle Scout is the highest rank attainable in the Boy Scout program. To earn this rank, the scout must plan, develop and lead a service project.

After visiting the Delaware SPCA nonprofit, no-kill animal shelter in Georgetown and meeting with staff there to assess the needs, Brandon set out to install shade shelters for the indoor/outdoor dog runs. The shelters will help keep the dogs cool in the summer while also protecting them from the elements year round.

Brandon organized the entire project, from generating funds and donations from local businesses and individuals to the planning and supervision of the project. The project has been in the planning and review process for the past nine months. He built the structures June 23 with the help of his family and an army of scouts from Troop 89.

“We are so pleased with the new shade shelters,” said Lisa Caputo, shelter manager of the Georgetown location. “They will allow our dogs to enjoy the outdoors while giving them a place to relax out of the direct sun or rain. We applaud Brandon’s exemplary efforts to improve the quality of life for our pets while they await homes, and are grateful to Troop 89 for their help.”

Brandon is still collecting donations toward the project.  To contribute, mail or drop off donations to Delaware SPCA, 22918 DuPont Blvd., Georgetown, earmarked for the Eagle Scout project.

The Delaware SPCA is the state’s oldest animal welfare organization, and celebrates 40 years in Sussex County this year. The Delaware SPCA receives no state or county funding and is not associated with the Kent County or any other SPCA or national organizations; it is a nonprofit organization that depends on local donations. Delaware SPCA operates shelters in Stanton and Georgetown providing humane law enforcement, adoption, spay/neuter and low-cost vaccination programs.
