January 17, 2026

Temperatures may be cold, but the Sussex Academy swim teams remain hot after both squads handled Sussex Central Jan. 16. The girls also bested Seaford in the tri-meet.

The girls struck down the Blue Jays 76-27 and the Golden Knights 76-17. Sussex Central bested Seaford 49-27.

Sussex Academy won all three relays and took almost every individual event, losing only the butterfly. Caitlin Perchiniak won the 200 freestyle with a 2:13.37 time. Anna Mumford flexed her flexibility by winning the 200 medley at 2:19.15. Sam Petty continued her winning streak in the 50 and touched at 28.24. Paige Blaine was fastest in the 100 freestyle, while Kendall Rhodes took the marathon race. Camila Figueroa won the backstroke and Emily Obertubbesing took the breaststroke to give the Seahawks a different winner for every individual victory.

Sussex Central gave the Sussex Academy boys a bit of a scare, but the Seahawks managed a 61-33 win. The Golden Knights took down Seaford 64-19. Senior Gary Layfield won the butterfly while the relay team of Lucian Turcan, Orion Wolf, Thomas Taulbee and Asa VanDrunen won the 200 freestyle.

Sussex Academy junior Michael Whitaker led the 200 medley and 400 free relay teams to victory while Keiran Probert anchored both races for the winners. Jackson Proctor and Kaleb Siok were in the middle of the medley squad, and eighth-graders Cale Argo and Nolan Furlong held down the second and third spots on the free relay team.

Argo’s 2:06.77 topped the 200 freestyle and his 1:02.27 was the best backstroke. Proctor took the individual medley and the breaststroke. Probert proved to be the fastest 50 with a 24.84 time. Whitaker’s 51.87 nabbed the 100 freestyle and senior Doug Klientop, a first-year swimmer, captured the 500.

After wrapping up three matches in a week, the Seahawks will get a full week’s rest before they travel to the Boys & Girls Club in Milford to take on the Buccaneers at 2:30 p.m., Friday, Jan. 23.
