Congratulations to Braden Shattuck of Wilmington for his third Delaware Open victory Aug. 26, held this time at Bayside Resort Club in Selbyville. The director of instruction at Rolling Green Golf Club in Springfield, Pa., won by 10 strokes over second-place finisher Zac Oakley, also a past Delaware Open winner.

Michael Chanaud of Bear Trap Dunes Golf Club, the 2023 winner, was the best Cape Region golfer to make the cut. He tied for sixth. Michael Rushin, also from Bear Trap, finished 26th

Chris Gray of Rehoboth Beach Country Club tied for 29th. Eric Willey of Kings Creek Country Club tied for 36th.

Turtleson

Cape Region NASCAR fans know about Bristol, Tenn. The famous speedway in the little town on the Virginia-Tennessee border has been a stock car racing Mecca for decades.

Cape Region golfers who enjoy the nicer things in life might also know Bristol as the home of Turtleson, the well-regarded upscale apparel company.

Last January, I had a nice chat with Turtleson’s co-founder Greg Oakley at the company’s busy booth at the PGA Show in Orlando, Fla.

“Turtleson was founded in 2011 by myself and Chet Sikorski. Our goal was to start a global sportswear brand based in our hometown of Bristol. It was very important to us that we be there, and we built it, but we knew we needed a brand that had legs outside our local area,” Oakley said.

“Today we’re found in high-end golf and golf resort accounts across the U.S. and men’s specialty stores in the U.S. and Canada. We have an office in Milton Keynes, England, that manages our European business. We also have reps in Australia, New Zealand and South Africa. We’ve established a pretty good footprint across the globe. Now we’re looking to just kind of fill in the gaps and get some brand awareness going,” he said.

The Bristol focus remains in place. “All of our offices are in Bristol,” Oakley said. “All of our warehousing, everything ships from Bristol, we have embroidery in Bristol. We’re not doing all the cutting and sewing of our product there. We manufacture all over the world, but everything we make comes to Bristol and it ships out from there. All decorative elements are finished there.”

The turtle logo is also popular across the globe, Oakley said. “We had a request to make those Turtleson Bristol Tennessee shelf signs. We now ship those signs all over the country and internationally. We know that our people that work with us are one of the reasons that we’re successful, and we just want to support the community.”

“The logo is part of the story as well,” he said. “I always had an affinity for turtles, and how we operate as a business is based on the turtle and that logo. Patience and perseverance are how we based our business, a little bit of slow and steady. We think success is earned over time. Again, it’s tied to the symbolism of the turtle,” Oakley said.

He showed off a wool sweater to illustrate their design goals. “It’s 100% Merino wool, 12-gauge Merino, it’s all-season weight. Merino wool speaks to our idea of blending luxury with performance. You’ll see quite a bit of Merino in the entire line. It’s naturally water-repellent, repels moisture. It’s a Fair Isle design which is very traditional classic pattern, but it’s a hoodie. So, it really is the performance. We’re all about hoodies these days. You’ll see more and more of them this season than we ever have.”

Heathered fabric continues to be popular, he said. “Heathers are easy to wear. We do some saturated color, but heather is an easy color variation to wear. It tends to soften up the color. It’s not so bold; I think guys find it easier to wear than maybe a saturated bold color,” Oakley said.

Some Cape Region clubs carry Turtleson, and its men’s and women’s lines are also available at the company’s website.
