Sheila O. Johnson, proud of Irish heritage

Sheila O. Johnson, 77, of Georgetown passed away peacefully at home Wednesday, Jan. 16, 2019. Sheila was born Dec. 28, 1941, in Belfast, Northern Ireland, and was very proud of her Irish heritage.  

She enjoyed crafting ceramics and travelling.  She especially loved travelling home to Ireland to spend time with her family and friends.  Sheila met her husband Fred while he was serving in the Navy, and she was a very active and supportive Navy wife. Their family resided in several countries during his enlistment, but she most favored Hawaii and Alaska, where her children were born.  After moving to Georgetown, Sheila worked for many years and retired in 2009 as a lab technician with Intervet in Millsboro.

Sheila also had a love for her faith.  She was a faithful active member of St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Church in Georgetown.

Sheila is preceded in death by her parents, Hugh and Mary (Cournane) Hamill; her beloved son, Timothy Eric Johnson; and her siblings, Peggy, John, Maureen, Tim, Kathleen, Helen and Annette.

She is survived by her husband with whom she shared 50 years of marriage, Fredrick A. “Fred” Johnson; one daughter, Kerry Anne Staniewski and her husband David of Millsboro; one granddaughter, Abaigeal Hannah Staniewski; one brother, Hugo Hamill and his wife Bridie of Belfast, Northern Ireland; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and extended family in the United States, Ireland and Australia.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m., Tuesday, Jan. 22, at St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Church, 202 Edward St., Georgetown.  A time of visitation for family and friends will be held Monday, Jan. 21, from 6 to 8 p.m., in the chapel of Short Funeral Services, 609 E. Market St., Georgetown.  Interment will be at Union Cemetery, Georgetown.

In honor of Sheila, the family welcomes contributions to the scholarship fund set up in memory of her son, Timothy.  Donations may be made payable to Sussex Central High School, memo line “Tim Johnson Memorial Soccer Scholarship” and mailed to Georgetown Middle School, c/o Kevin Cash, 301 W. Market St., Georgetown, DE  19947.
